Visiting Assistant Professor of English (first-year writing)
Position Description:
Visiting Assistant Professor of English (first-year writing)
The Department of English at the College of Charleston welcomes applications for a two-year visiting assistant professor position with a start date of August 16, 2026. Required qualifications include A Ph.D. in composition studies, or a Ph.D. or M.F.A. in a related discipline with training in rhetoric, composition, and first-year writing. The teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester, with a focus on our four-credit-hour first-year writing course. There may also be occasional opportunities to teach in areas beyond first-year writing that align with the candidate’s academic and teaching interests.
Founded in 1770 and located in the heart of historic Charleston, South Carolina, the College of Charleston is a public liberal arts institution with around 10,000 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students. The English department offers a B.A. in English with three concentrations — creative writing, literature and film, and writing, rhetoric, and publication. We also offer a BA in secondary English education and an MFA in creative writing.
Contact Department Chair Dr. Anton Vander Zee (vanderzeeal@cofc.edu) with questions about applying. Additional materials may be requested after the initial review.
