Job Description
The AbbVie Process Chemistry Chromatographic Separations Lab is actively seeking an Associate Scientist II or Scientist I. Our team collaborates with colleagues across multiple disciplines, offering expertise in preparative chromatography to support a broad range of AbbVie R&D programs. We maintain and utilize specialized equipment for various separation tasks, including the purification of peptides, ADC drug-linkers, and chiral compounds, as well as the isolation of low-level API impurities. Additionally, the team is responsible for pilot-scale preparative purification, developing scalable purification processes, and overseeing their implementation under cGMP guidelines at AbbVie's North Chicago Chemical Pilot Plant. This role will contribute to the development of novel/advanced separations technologies and broader efforts to develop new process technologies for advancing the AbbVie pipeline. We are seeking a motivated scientist who demonstrates initiative and technical proficiency in supporting research and development projects within a collaborative team environment. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience developing chromatographic methods and troubleshooting complex separation challenges. Experience working with peptides is highly desirable, but not required for application. Key Responsibilities: - Develop and execute purification processes supporting development of small molecule, antibody drug conjugate, and peptide clinical candidates.
- Demonstrate scientific initiative and creativity in planning, executing, and troubleshooting experiments, resolving key project challenges with an appropriate level of autonomy based on experience.
- Conduct a range of laboratory and pilot-scale tasks, analyze and interpret data, and drive project objectives, assuming responsibility for tasks in accordance with experience.
- Suggest, adapt, and, as appropriate, implement new or improved experimental protocols/techniques, consulting relevant literature as needed.
- Build and maintain strong collaborative relationships with peers and cross-functional partners.
- Foster a learning environment, encourage diverse ideas, and support continuous process improvement.
- Understand and adhere strictly to corporate standards for conduct, safety, quality, and proper handling of materials.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree with at least 3 years (Associate Scientist II) or 5 years (Scientist I) relevant experience; or Masters degree with no additional experience (Associate Scientist II) or typically +2 years of relevant experience (Scientist I).
- Strong technical background in Separations Science, with theoretical and practical knowledge required to independently carry out job functions.
- Demonstrated proficiency in developing, troubleshooting, and modifying chromatographic methods and purification protocols.
- Broad expertise in analytical techniques, with emphasis on chromatography, compound purification, and spectral analysis.
- Ability to search scientific literature and evaluate potential solutions to research problems.
- Effective written and oral communication skills; able to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
